Line-up
The album's third, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet arrangement of the previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album reflected the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's greater ability on the drums and a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard skills were also sharper, more complex and less akin to previous efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the band recorded their Amsterdam live concert that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed a few months later, and the group went on a long-distance tour in support of it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in the form of a double-album called Then And Now in 2001. It was the first album in the history of the band that did not include one single track with the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which affected his singing abilities.
